A home survey is the first real step toward a stair lift. It is free, takes under an hour and commits you to nothing. A little preparation helps you get the most from it.
Who should be there
- The person who will use the lift, without exception
- A family member or friend, if that would help with decisions
Before the visit
- Clear the stairs and both landings
- Note which staircases cause difficulty
- Think about how you get on and off a chair now. Is one side stronger?
- Write down your questions
What the surveyor does
- Measures the length, width and pitch of the stairs
- Checks headroom
- Looks at the space at the top and bottom
- Notes doors, radiators, vents and outlets
- Asks about the rider’s height, weight and mobility
What you will discuss
- Which side of the stairs the rail should go on
- Which model suits the rider
- Whether a folding rail is needed
- Options such as a powered swivel
Questions to ask
- How soon can it be installed, and how long will that take?
- What does the warranty cover?
- Who do I call if something goes wrong?
- What does servicing cost?
- Can the lift be removed if we move?
After the visit
You should receive a written quote showing the model, the options and the total. Take whatever time you need to consider it.
Good signs
- The surveyor listens more than they sell
- You are told which options you do not need
- There is no pressure to sign that day
